In India, hydro power projects are administratively divided into two distinct buckets based on their station capacity:
- Large Hydro: Projects with a capacity above 25 MW fall under the administrative purview of the Ministry of Power.
- Small Hydro (SHP): Projects with a station capacity up to 25 MW are classified as renewable energy and are managed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

The Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) will serve as the National Programme implementing Agency (NPIA)for the scheme.
The total approved outlay for the scheme is t 2,584.60 crore.
