Project UDAYAK

News:

Border Roads Organisation (BRO) celebrated 37th Raising Day of Project UDAYAK on June 01, 2026 at Doomdooma, Assam.

About UDAYAK:

  1. Entrusted with over 1,457 km of road network, Project UDAYAK has been instrumental in the development and maintenance of strategic road infrastructure in the easternmost regions of Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Assam.
  2. Its area of responsibility covers the districts of Anjaw, Lohit, Dibang Valley, Longding, Tirap and Changlang.
  3. The Project plays a vital role in enhancing connectivity in remote and strategically significant areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the Indo–Myanmar border.

About BRO:

The Ministry: The BRO functions entirely under the control of the Ministry of Defence. (Note: Before 2015, it operated under a hybrid model where it received funds from the Ministry of Shipping and Road Transport, but it was fully brought under Defence to improve strategic execution).

Border Roads Organisation (BRO) motto: ‘Shramena Sarvam Sadhyam’.

Operational Reach: While its primary mandate is to secure India’s borders, the BRO also executes critical strategic infrastructure projects in friendly neighboring countries, including Afghanistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, Tajikistan, and Sri Lanka.

Workforce Composition: It is staffed by a combination of officers and troops from the Corps of Engineers of the Indian Army, the Border Roads Engineering Service (BRES), and a large local civilian workforce.

Key Roles and Strategic Value:

  1. Defense Readiness: During a conflict, the BRO maintains and clears strategic roads to ensure that the Indian Armed Forces can move troops, tanks, and heavy artillery to the frontlines without delay.
  2. Socio-Economic Growth: During peacetime, the BRO constructs roads, bridges, and tunnels in extremely rugged terrain (such as Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim). This connects isolated border villages to the national mainstream, boosting local trade, tourism, and healthcare access.

Major Landmarks and Innovations

  1. Atal Tunnel (Rohtang): Built by the BRO, it is one of the longest highway tunnels in the world above 10,000 feet, ensuring all-weather connectivity between Manali and the Lahaul-Spiti valley.
  2. Umling La Pass: The BRO constructed the world's highest motorable road at Umling La in Ladakh, sitting at an altitude of over 19,000 feet, surpassing the previous record held by Bolivia.
  3. Project Beacon & Project Himank: The BRO operates through named "Projects" deployed in specific regions to handle targeted infrastructure challenges (e.g., Project Arunank in Arunachal Pradesh, Project Vijayak in Ladakh).
