ICAR-IIOR Smart Seed Coating Technology
News:

The ICAR-Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research has developed a patented biopolymer-based Smart Seed Coating Technology to improve seed quality, crop establishment and climate resilience.
About Smart Seed Coating Technology:
It is an Indian patent developed by ICAR-IIOR that coats seeds with a biodegradable biopolymer layer containing useful agricultural inputs.
The coating can carry:
- Beneficial microorganisms (biofertilizers)
- Nutrients and micronutrients
- Crop protection agents
- Plant growth promoters
Thus, it creates a protective microenvironment around the seed.
How does it work?
Conventional Seed: Seed → Germination → Exposure to drought, pests, poor soil conditions
Smart Seed: Seed + Biopolymer coating + Nutrients + Microbes + Protection agents → Better germination and seedling survival.
The technology provides:
- Faster germination
- Better root growth
- Stronger seedlings
- Higher stress tolerance
- Better crop establishment
Significance for Rainfed Agriculture:
This technology is especially useful for rainfed farming, where crop failure often occurs due to:
- Delayed monsoon
- Dry spells
- Poor germination
- Moisture stress
Since nearly half of India's net sown area is rainfed, the technology can significantly improve farm productivity.
